About my life
by Antero Hurtado,  Lone Star College, Houston, Texas

I have a family of five. We were all born in Bogota, Colombia. My family consists of my wife, Gloria, two sons, Edinson and Andres, a daughter, Danniela and myself. My profession was  a registered pharmacist in Colombia and my sons were college students. On December 4, 1999, for political reasons against me for what I wanted to do, I had to leave my country and travel to the United States. I was determined to learn English because I had a family who depended on me. I hope one day to be able to work in my profession again.

My first son eventually learned English and has become a manager for Bank of America. My second son learned English too and he is a pastor for the United Pentecostal Hispanic Church. My daughter won the Spelling Bee at her elementary school.

I had to work on different jobs that didn't have anything to do with my profession. The work was very hard and difficult because I couldn't speak English. I am very thankful for the Lone Star College Systems (Northwest Assistance Ministries) here in Houston, Texas for giving me this opportunity to fulfill my dream. This is an excellent program and I recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their English skills. I am also thankful to have an excellent teacher like Mrs. Jacklyn Ross. I explained to her that I needed help in writing and she encouraged me to write my thoughts about my life. She works hard in a very special way so that we can learn all we can to function in this country. ESL classes can open doors for wonderful opportunities. I know it for a fact. Look at my children!
